Edo Varsity Students Protest Arbitrary Hike in Tuition Fees

By Eben Enasco Kingsley, Benin City

Students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo state yesterday staged a peaceful protest against what they called the arbitrary hike of fees by the school management

The protesting students with various inscribed placards; Reduce Our  School Fees,  Education Is Not For The Rich Alone, No Reduction ,No Resumption,  N165k No Be Beans, stormed the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to registered their resentment

Spoke person for the group and Member National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) Governing Council, Comrade Edwin Ahkimien Okolose demanded for immediate reversal of the tuition fees hiked from the current N47,000 to 165,000 which represent over 400% increment

He said the economic reality in the country, coupled with the  present 18,000 minimum wage many parents cannot afford such fees adding that the action of the institution management equally fell short of the idea of the founding father of the university to make education affordable to all

He frowned at the decision of the school management to shunned the committee of management/ students representatives earlier suggested by NANS to negotiate the issues of fees

He said the students body (NANS) has consequently issued 24hours ultimatum to the University to shut down the school portal (KOFA) and immediately reverse the fees, adding that failure to comply, the entire students would be left with no choice but to embark on mass protest

"Success in the police is always borne out of foundational key values of a spartan lifestyle, self contentment, discipline, belief in God and dedication to duty.

"Consequently, I will like to advise the upcoming generation who are currently in service and those who would yet be enlisted in years to come to eschew unholy acts, the unhealthy practices of cutting corners that ultimately lead to dismissal and pre-mature retirement", he said.

He said the police career is service oriented and that any professions shorts of service to humanity is both a disservice to God and mankind.

He said for the force to be able to live up to its billings, men and officers of the force should be provided the well withal to function adequately.

"The issue of personnel training, motivation and logistics in the force needs urgent attention to enable officers and men of the force to put in their best as the consensus the world over suggests, the Nigeria police force is adjudged one of the best police establishment on the planet", he said.

In his good will message, Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Mr. Zanna Mohammad Idris said his retirement from the force, marks the end and the beginning of a new era in his life and that his wealth of experiences accumulated over the years can still be of a great benefit to the force stressing he should not short his door at them when they come knocking at his door for advice.

He availed that on the 30th day of September 2016, there was an emergency call from the senior police officer at Okhuaihe police divisional headquarters in Edo State calling on all the civil vigilante in Emuhun, Ugoneki and it's environ seeking for their kind support and assistance to rescue the kidnapped wife of the central bank governor of Nigeria, Mrs. Margaret Emefiele and three others alleged to have been kidnapped with her by the abductors.

He reiterated that the police, who described the incidence as an embarrassment to the Edo State Police Command and the nation at large, said she was abducted by gunmen at Ugoneki area while traveling along the Benin Asaba express way.

He said the vigilante responded urgently to the call including the slain victim noting that it was however painful that while trying to rescue the abducted woman that he was fell by the bullet of the kidnappers who  shot sporadically into the bush.

"The late Gabriel Okorare one of the vigilante member who determined to join force with security operative (police) to rid off the localities of all forms of criminality including kidnapping, responded to the police call with vigilante colleagues and Jon other security operative the police, the DSS and the police monitoring team from Abuja combed the bush forest to rescue the wife of the CBN governor, Mrs. Margaret Emefiele from the kidnappers' den

He said the report of the vigilante's death has since being reported at Okhuaihe police station and that the commissioner of Police Edo State who promised to convey the matter to the appropriate authority has also failed to pay a condolence visit to the family.

The younger wife to the deceased, Mrs. Gladys Okorare, 35, said they came to call her late husband that there was an urgent need to attend to on that fateful day but surprisingly that  when  his colleagues came home, he could not return with them but she was later told that he has been killed in a gun duel in the bush by the kidnappers.

She said,’’ ever since the death of her husband, life has become unbearable for the family.

The first son to the deceased, Mr. Roland Okorare, 36, said those concerned should come and give his father a befitting burial and also render assistance to those he left behind.

The first wife to the deceased, Mrs. Victoria Okorare, 60, said she was at her village when the incident happened. She said she was called to be informed about her husband's death.

Comrade Igbinosun Wilson, chairman Ugoneki vigilante unit, said they were grouped together and that when they were still standing, suddenly, four men with an AK47 riffles started shooting sporadically into the bush and that was how he was killed.

He said, the claim made by the law enforcement agencies of arresting and rescuing the abducted CBN's wife was all false as they were those who made every arrest and rescue mission possible.

BENSON OBODEH MURDER TRIAL: Respondent Counsel Fingered, as attempted 1Million Bribe scandal uncovered.

The Alleged Conspirator Barr. Ujiagbe

BENSON OBODEH MURDER TRIAL:  Respondent Counsel Fingered, as attempted 1Million Bribe scandal uncovered.

By Eben Enasco Kingsley Benin City

Tension was at its climax as new twist emerged today following attempted one million Naira tipoff by the defendants counsel to hoodwink the sitting Judge of High Court II Benin City, sitting over the alleged gruesome murder charge of late Benson Obodeh 26, a car dealer accused of snatching Peugeot 306 Saloon car in early May 2015 by four dismissed Police Corporals attached to Special Anti Robbery Squared, SARS Ikeja Lagos uncovered.

The revelation which was contained in a petition  filed by Barrister Abraham Oviawe a legal Consultant cum Human  Right Activist  and solicitor to the family of the diseased Benson
explicitly explained and addressed to the Attorney General  and Commissioner Justice Edo State.

The petition captioned “Conspiracy to subvert the cause of justice by Barrister Kenneth Ujiagbe of the Edo State Ministry of Justice in a Charge No B/CD/48c/15 against Corporal Adedeji Adeleke now dismissed and 4 others”.

Addressing news men shortly after the court sitting in Benin City, Barrister Oviawe complained  of the criminal tendencies of one Kenneth Ujiagbe over his unofficial  visit  to  the Benin Prison Sapele  Road  through connivance  of some prison warders to perhaps frustrate and churlishly release the accused persons through  the ministry  of Justice  hence he works there.

The dismissed police officers, Adeleke Adedeji 33, Oniyo Musa 35, Abena John 33, Joseph Omotosho and Henry Shobowale 32 who has been facing 3-count charge of conspiracy and murder appeared  early as court proceeding  commenced.

The information in the petition dated September 2, 2015 further revealed that, Barrister Kenneth
Ujiagbe requested for the sum of One Million Naira to execute the heinous act as the first Accused person Adedeji Adeleke put a call to his Family Member and his Lawyer to authorize the transfer of the said amount to Barr.  Kenneth's Bank Account

It was gathered  that the said amount was meant  to infiltrate the judge to compromise and Grant the accused bail which was out rightly rejected by Justice Ovbaigele according to the source.

The relationship between the dealers broke up when the deal could not see the light of the day whilst Barr.  Kenneth was asked to refund the said amount since he could not broker the evil deal.

Consequently, we were told by a reliable source that the sum of Five hundred thousand has so far been refunded by the alleged conspirator, Barr. Ujiagbe whilst he pleaded to refund the other half of the said amount.

"We are constrained to urgently call your attention to the Criminal tendencies and activities of Barrister Kenneth Ujiagbe who is a counsel in the state ministry of Justice with regards to subverting justice. We urge you to immediately query him and activities with regards to the foregoing facts" Oviawe stated.

When sorted for comments shortly after the court session Barr. Otumba Olakunlelin Goke who spoke on behalf of the conspirator raved while debunking such Allegations.

“That allegation is unfounded because I am not aware of it. Nobody gave money. The author of this allegation goofed” he stated.

When asked if he was aware that Barrister Ujiagbe was placed on suspension with further investigation ongoing, he quipped, “Am not aware if Kenneth is on suspension”

Similarly, when our correspondent scooped to know more from the office of the Attorney General of Edo State over the petition, it was confirmed that they were aware of it but noted that the honorable commissioner was the right person to speak on the issue of alleged suspension of Barr. Ujiagbe but was absent as at the time of this report.

The presiding Judge Justice Ohimai Ovbaigele having carefully listened to the party’s application ordered that the claimant witness be cross examined as the case was however adjourned till November 10 as hearing for the criminal charge of alleged murder continues.
