GOVERNOR OSHIOMHOLE: X-RAYING A TRUE FORTRESS OF CHANGE

Before the advent of the electoral victory in 2007 of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and eventual inauguration as Governor of Edo State, in November 12, 2008, Edo State challenges were peculiar and numerous, that in every street one could imagine a change. But then the questions were saddled with whom and when will the bastion of that change ever come to liberates the Edo Community from those cabals that have abducted and held hostage with coven of political godfathers who privatized the public treasury, treated the people as slaves and spoke with the magisterial certainty of a tin gods.

 Before long, the mandate of the people were defended through the Apex Court to retrieve their votes having won the elections credibly; hence, decreed and thereafter, came to pass and in clear terms, the people’s votes pitted against the then ruling People Democratic Party, (PDP), in Edo State.

That stirring feelings which makes thousands of Edo people readily join the practical procession of change saw the man of the moment Comrade Oshiomhole sworn in to pilot the affairs of the state.

On assumption of office in 2008, as democratically elected Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole made it abundantly clear that his administration will focus on making a great impact on the lives of the people of the state with a great demarcation from anything before that have existed perhaps after the legendary values of Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia.

In the light of the one man one vote mantra and subsequent change promises, the people were not sure,but rather, it became a tuvy-tuv decision to trust the new era of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by stakeholders in the state as subsequent government had made series of unkept promises and people had their own mind to doubt if any good thing could come from Bethlehem.

Evidently, Comrade Oshiomhole fondly known for his ability to confront the ugliest monster concomitantly aligned with the people who in their own rights, provided him the right ambiance not only to properly situate his developmental agendas for the people, but also, to prove beyond all odds, development that was almost impossible in some quarters whilst is indeed, now possible and today his signposts of his infrastructural-driven curriculum, are numerously scattered across every length and breadth of the entire State.

Together, the administration of the revered Comrade Governor in his quest to take Edo people through flight snags & hiccups was trusted to bring about needful project to better the life of the people he governs.

Today, the lion-hearted comrade can beat his chest with absolute vehemence that surely, the change has come and his vision accomplished to a large extent during his first four-year of his administration.

By and large, in our analysis and assessment, his administration has tackled and made some visible progress in various sectors under his watch, particularly in Education, Roads Construction and Maintenance, Health Sectors, Empowerment, Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Art, Culture and Tourism, Lands, Survey and Housing and many more.
However, as the clock gradually ticks and his tenure in the past seven and half years draw ever closer toward the end of the tunnel, the historic significant of his performance has drawn applauds across the state and in general, the nation. We have thoughtfully streamlined how he has steered the governance of the people of Edo State with glimpses of his modest efforts in the direction of transformation.

On Education Sector, the government of Adams Oshiomhole has taken enormous steps to massively invest billions of Naira through a deliberate reconstruction, rehabilitation and re-equipping of a dilapidated and abandoned structures that looks like hovel fit only for pigs and reptiles habitations. But today, the face of Education in the state has changed considerably from the Old structure that beclouded the previous government to the Adams red roof buildings.

Notwithstanding, the larger society would agree with me that apart from the Red roofed adventure, stakeholders have also scored him low in blessing the renovated school buildings with qualified and committed  Teachers because what makes a building counts according to our local adage is the people living in it. The larger opinion would have adopted the fact that the governor pay more attention on employing more capable hands to bring to bear shortage of trained tutors to man the beautiful structure to complements his efforts. However, it was a better performance than his immediate predecessor though.

Away from Education, we have closely taking a look at some of the road network before the inception of Oshiomhole’s’ administration. Virtually, all the roads in the state were in deplorable condition and most impassably characterized by deep gullies, non-existent drains and serious flooding problems. Since inception of his administration, the face of our roads evidently has changed with walkways, double lanes, street lights, traffic lights, and well fitted drains to averts erosion challenges that has bedeviled the state.

In the Health Sector, the government has embarked on massive re-constructions of ultra-modern General Hospitals in the state capital, and in the 18 LGAs with clear cut emphasis on maternity wards to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. In this regards, I flurry of activities has been implemented in the health sectors that have driven the vision to free the citizens of Edo State from the heavy burden of communicable diseases, with a mindset of improving the quality of life thereby increasing the life expectancy of the people.

On transportation sector, it was a long way people went when they knew not where they were going, and they were headed for doom; difficulties in driving on the street of Benin City because of chaotic traffic situation brought about by indiscriminate parking and complete disregards for traffic rules and regulations in the state

But today, the story has changed, as we now have free flow of traffic on our roads with decongested King’s Square which has also been beautified with modern walkways flourishing flowers and ornamental plants
.
This analysis maybe compacted due to space available but then, whether
you like it or not, hate it or not, our Bastion of change has improved lives and he should be unreservedly celebrated for breaking evens amidst cabals who probed the state treasury for the selfish interest, and for the first time after Brigadier Samuel Ogbemudia (Rtd) era as a genus, hero and a role model for his astute contributions to the then dying Edo as to the now holistically revived Edo of our generations.

NCC IDENTIFIES CONSUMER EDUCATION FOR EFFECTIVE MECHANISM SERVICES

The Nigerian Communication Commission has identified Consumer
Education as one of the most cost effective mechanism that provides
and guarantees consumer protection as a proactive way of protecting
consumers from making wrong choices.

The statement was made on the occasion of its 77 edition of the
consumers outreach programme with the theme, Information & Education
as a Catalyst for consumer protection held on Thursday in Benin City.

Addressing participants, the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC,
Abdullahi Maikanko ably represented by his deputy,Dr. Femi Atoyebi,
quipped that the programme was established by the commission to bring
together, Consumers, Service Providers and its regulators to address
telecom consumer related issues.

Dr. Atoyebi reiterated that the objective was also geared towards
ensuring that the consumers are giving the right protection, education
and information that will help curb unwholesome practices of some
service providers.


He said,"at the Nigerian communication commission, the telecom
consumers are the target beneficiary of all our activities and enjoy
primary focus in terms of ensuring that they get good service, value
for money spent, timely and fair redress of complaints and protection
from unwholesome practices.

"It also seeks to educate telecom Consumers and other stakeholders on
the contemporary issues generating interest in the industry,"he
explained.

Atoyebi however, maintained that the initiative which is spanned
through organizing outreach programmes will also ensure that its
statutory obligations are correctly spelt out with the view to protect
consumers interest.

Some of the participants however frowned at the attitude of the
service providers while urging them to look at areas they can improve
on to deliver quality services to its users.

with Eben Enasco Kingsley, he spoke on salient issues regarding the
life of a Christian and many others.

Apostle Dr. Okoh

You have been around for four decades in gospel business; tell us how
it has been in the ministry

Well it has been a wonderful journey and experience in the sense that
it spans through rough and smooth. To a large extent it has been very
rough and few times it is been smooth. That has been the journey thus
far. But I must confess that I have no regrets.

We appreciate the fact that the main objectives of establishing a
ministry is to perhaps search for lost sheep and ensure that they
return to the house of God. Would you say you have been successful as
regards winning souls considering how difficult it proves to convince
unbelievers?
First of all you must recognize the grace of God because Christianity
is about the grace of God. It is on account in the book of life that
God so Love the world that he gave his only begotten Son that who so
ever believes in him have everlasting life. We came through the grace
of God. In Ephesians 2vs 9 says by the grace of god through faith not
of war which any man should boast. Again in Romans 5vs8 God commended
his words towards us. That’s were Grace came in because the acceptance
of God is where the Grace reflects. By believing in Christ Jesus Grace
is made available to us and when grace is available you see yourself
living the life you ought not to have lived. So therefore, whatever it
portrays it was not an accident and by your own making. By this there
is no struggle when the grace is available. There is no struggle in
Christianity.  When I gave my life to Christ I saw transformation. But
then, it did not come once but gradually it came. I saw the grace of
God in me. It was not my effort and to say I pray a lot or so
intelligent. No! No!! No!!! It was by acceptance and conviction of the
word of God through the Grace by transmission.

By our estimations, pastors are believed to arbitrate between God and
his people, but lately in some quarters, pastors have been criticized
for deviating from the aims of establishing the church. What do you
think can be done in your own right to fix the scruffy image of
pastors in the society?

To start with, any man called by God is called in question. Remember
that Apostle Paul said, that am preaching the resurrection of Christ
is call in question. Even me, am called in question. You must be a
crusader of the gospel of Christ Jesus. This is to say you must be
prepared to defend what saved you. This things happening now is not
accidental because the scripture must be fulfilled because there must
be false prophets before you have true Prophets. There is why this
slogan rings bell because if there’s no attack no defense.  No venture
no success. No sickness no healing. This thing complements. So false
prophets, make true prophets a manifestation. So those who toll the
side of false prophets shall be rewarded. Every genuine man of God
should pray for God restoration because God can only restore those who
backslide and are ready to reunite with the truth.

The body of Christ is one, but you have people proclaims different
denominations. Can we believe this to be absolutely correct; and if
not, what are you doing to inform the people the need to come together
as Christ recommended.

Look, every one of us should know his calling. The division is because
most of us don’t know the areas we are useful and by the calling we
are expected to abide by it. You see, like you have the human body
with legs, ears, mouths and eyes functions differently but are in one
body so is the calling by God. But when eyes function as legs it
becomes a problem. It is not possible to say you will function in all
capacities. When you function in all capacities it becomes an error
and that brings division. In one body all other parts of the body
functions. So it is the same thing in the body of Christ. Until the
unity of the saints comes together; mind you the togetherness is not
done by mere gathering but the wise master builder who planted
apostle, prophets, pastors and teachers to the unity of the body of
Christ. It is not economical to do that. No man has the capacity to do
that. Remember Jesus Christ said, I will build my church and the gate
of hell will not prevail. Just like some of us says I will heal and
prophecy to you. It is an error because the Holy Spirit gives us
utterances to perform the tasks. It is not my duty to convince anyone
but the duty of the Holy Spirit. My duty is to preach the word as He
will reveal Christ to us. That’s the role of the Holy Spirit. But a
situation when we want to take his place we would be stalked. In
today’s Christianity the Holy Spirit is not recognize because it is
invisible. Until you search the scriptures to discover the relevance
it will not function in you. The point is that we were told the
present dispensation is of the Holy Spirit but do we recognize him? Do
we believe in him?  Failure to recognize him means he cannot come into
us. He is the elucidator. He is the one that reveals Christ to us. He
inspires unction to function in the realms of the spirit. That is why
the Book says not by mine power but by my spirit says the Lord. No
Pastors does this job, except the Holy Ghost.  In the old, men were
moved by the Holy Ghost when they wrote the Holy Bible. If you don’t
believe in Holy Ghost, you are on your own and you will fall victim
and then face the consequence. Ephesians 1vs 13 says when you receive
Christ he comes into you inform of the Holy Spirit. That means you are
sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise when you trusted Jesus as your
Lord and Savior. That is that power to say, ‘But as many as received
him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them
that believe on his name:  John1vs12 and vs. 13 there says, children
born not of blood, nor will of the flesh, nor will of man, but born of
God that is to say the holy spirit transform us. In other words, you
have been empowered to stand persecution and test of time. He will
make you remember things because you will not be isolated in the main
stream of God. So the visional is the Holy Spirit in you not mere says
I see visions. These are the benefits in Christ Jesus. That is when
Jesus said when that benefits of the father comes who I will send
after my departure

What would you describe as your challenges in the propagation of the Gospel?
Man power and Financial Resources are two major areas that have
hindered the progression. Even as individuals we run our businesses
with capital. In the same vein the things of God. Christianity is
capital intensive. But then God promise to give workers in his
vineyard to do his work. That is why Jesus said when he saw multitudes
besiege him, in the book of Mathew he said I will not let them go
because he saw souls languishing. The scarcity to see pastors who are
after soul winning is an issue. This is my cry. I need helpers who
understand this vision to work with me. We need financial improvement
to do more. Look if you are in the part of truth, its takes truth
lovers to believe and support you. But most people in these categories
are financially handicap.

Now looking at the word of God in ACT 19VS 20, ‘In the City of Ephesus
so mightily grew the word of God and prevailed’ does this not suggest
that as a Christian you should be far from wants/lack if we actually
portrays the exemplary life of Christ Jesus?
The word prevail has to do with effect of labour. That’s where that
word came from Yes that’s absolutely correct but I have got much
benefit than the hard times. You can imagine a magician after his
ordeals he has to make restitutions various churches there’s a gospel
you hear and make restitutions. If you ask for this part of the Gospel
nobody will be with you. Looking around today the truth is not
preached. How many of us can seat down when they preach the truth and
seat down to hear it? Remember Christ died because he preached the
truth. John the Baptist was beheaded because of the truth. The
question is who want to be beheaded? However notwithstanding, he says
I will build my church and gates of hell will not prevail. Talking
about benefits is awesome in Gods vineyard. I have been blessed beyond
imagination. For sure I am not a reproach to God. By the grace of god
the foundation of God standeth tall. I want to urge those who are far
from the words of God to return.

Arson: Edo community gets N10m cash, relief materials

Edo State Government has presented N10m cash and other relief materials worth millions of naira to the people of Bekuma in Akoko Edo Local Government area, who were affected in an attack on them by some youths from a neighbouring community on 30th March, 2016.

 

Presenting the N10m cash and 150 bundles of roofing sheets to the Oba of Bekuma, Oba Moses Alabi at the palace of the Otaru of Igarra, Oba Emmanuel Adeche Saiki II, on Sunday, Governor Oshiomhole said anyone who ever again resorts to arson and killings in the name of reprisals will be prosecuted and sent to prison if convicted.

 

He said: “if we quarrel, we must not allow it to degenerate to madness as to begin to burn property, burn houses, destroy assets, or even kill people; which is absolutely unacceptable. We must work together, that is, the traditional institution, the local government and the state government, to identify criminals, it doesn’t matter what interest they pretend to canvass. Arson is a serious crime.

 

“Destruction of property is a very serious crime. Killing is a very serious crime. It is a capital offence in our legal system. I want to make it very clear: if anyone further resorts to acts of destruction, of killing, of arson, Edo State Government will prosecute immediately, and if we secure a conviction, we will send the person to prison. People like that belong in prison. Nothing justifies those levels of violence as to render anybody homeless.”

 

He commended the royal fathers in Akoko Edo Local Government for fostering unity among the people, saying “let me begin by appreciating your royal fathers, your royal highnesses for working together as royal fathers in Akoko Edo Local government because by working together, meeting together, having conversation on matters affecting the people, and various communities in Akoko Edo local government, you are leading the people by example."

 

He continued, “The important thing, therefore, is irrespective of our locations, irrespective of our dialects, we belong to one race: the human race. And in this local government, you belong to just one local government, Akoko Edo local government, regardless of your dialect or language. We are bound to live together as one people because we are one people. We are bound to make friends across all divides. We are brothers; we are sisters.”

 

Oshiomhole advised, “So when we see some of our brothers misbehaving, doing things that bring hardship to other people, we shouldn’t visit the sin of one on every other person. I want to appeal to you, the Chief of Bekuma and the people of Bekuma to accept what has happened as God’s will, and be consoled by the fact there is no one that I know that has not condemned it in heart, beyond words of mouth, the unfortunate incident that threw your community into untold hardship. It cannot be justified. No one has the right to resort to arson. So, I to appeal to you to sustain what you are already doing, preaching to your people to accept the pains with the hope that this will not happen again, and that you derive some relief from the empathy and sympathy that has been shown by all the royal fathers in Akoko Edo and beyond.

They have all condemned this act of violence, dehumanization and destruction of property and even destroying the school of small school children.

“On behalf of the people of Edo State, we present these roofing sheets to you, the Oba of Bekuma, to assist your community members whose houses were razed down in the unfortunate incident. We have also added N10 million to enable them buy wood, nails and other things. Whatever other support that we can do, we will arrange it through the committee and deliver to you over the next coming week. You will get another message from us.”

Responding the Otaru of Igarra Kingdom and Chairman of Bekuma rehabilitation committee, HRH Oba Emmanuel Adeche Saiki II said, “We cannot stop appreciating you. On behalf of the entire traditional rulers in Akoko Edo local government, I wholeheartedly appreciate you for your kind gesture for the donation of relief materials to Bekuma community in Akoko Edo as a result of the recent communal clash whereby some properties were destroyed. Your response to the incidence goes to show that you are a symbol of honour, confidence and hope and exponent of human kindness to humanity.”

 

The Oba said, “We deeply appreciate you. We share the biblical view that when the righteous rule, the people rejoice. We pray that the God almighty to grant you many fruitful years, good health and requisite enablement to pursue your exemplary services to the people of Edo State and the country in general.”

Also speaking the traditional ruler of Bekuma, Oba Moses Alabi said, “I am deeply overwhelmed to sincerely appreciate a day like this, that really there are God-sent people, that you can make one not to lose his hope. On the 30th March, 2016 till today, no one has ever seen smile on my face, but today, the Comrade Governor has added smile to the faces of Bekuma. We indeed appreciate the relief materials you have given to us. It is not only the relief materials, but you have relieved our souls.”

 

It would be recalled that two persons were feared killed while about 40 houses, a public school and the palace of the village head of Bekuma were razed when some youths from a neighbouring community unleashed an attack on Bekuma on 30th March, this year.

An alleged assassination attempt on the Accord party flag bearer Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki has been foiled in Benin City by vigilant and resilient aides and neighbors.

It was gathered that, the alleged assassins invaded his private residence on Sunday August 7 at wee hour of the night.

When our reporter scooped further on the incidence it was alleged that the perpetrators were from his counterpart party, the All Progressive Congress APC candidate, Mr Godwin OBASEKI.

Narrating the aborted incidents to our correspondents, Dr. Don Pedro disclosed that on Sunday night, after a prolonged friendly conversation with an APC stalwart and former Vice Chancellor, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma Professor Denis Agbonlahor, to advise the professor not to allow his party supporters mess up his compound when they held their scheduled rally on Monday, the wife of Professor Agbonlahor allegedly bullied and  harassed Pedro Obaseki and went further to make series of calls to several unknown persons which according to the source led to tensed argument that lasted for few moments.

Informed by Mrs. Agbonlahor’s calls, him, (Don Pedro) immediately alerted security agency who arrived the scene promptly and restore peace.

Shortly after the police had left, it was reported that a group of about 30 thugs wearing etched  t-shirts of Godwin Obaseki stormed the area, allegedly led by a certain Lawrence Orka, and the APC leader in Ward 7.

The armed brigands whom we were reliably informed came to Obazee Street where Don Pedro Obaseki resides around Upper Mission Road Axis, when they shot sporadically to ward off any unknown advances probably insinuated by them.

The whole episode was generated from the visit to Professor Agbonlahor which led to the eventual assaults on Don Pedro as it’s on evidence recorded by secret CCTV footage.

Reportedly, it was learn that the video footage has been taken to the Security Agency for onward investigation.

Some Youths in the area who were sympathetic to Dr Pedro Obaseki came out to resist the intruders but they were over powered by the armed bandits  who were hell bent with machetes and bottles which led to several injuries inflicted on his personal assistant and others .

As at the time of putting the report together Many of the wounded victims were receiving treatment in Rhd hospital located within the localities.

The hired assassins attempted to gain entrance into the compound of Don Pedro Obaseki but were resisted by the Personal Assistant of Don Pedro Obaseki, Mr. Ferdinand Orumwense. 

The alleged hired assassins then vented their anger on Mr. Ferdinand Orumwense as they pummel him with several deep cuts in his head as he tries to defend his boss who escaped by mere whisker as his assailants gained entrance into his compound.

Recalled that, the former gubernatorial aspirant of the APC who later cross carpet  when he noticed he could barely stand a chance to nip the sole ticket when he deflected to the Accord Party having alleged unfair treatment in the Party by its leaders because his cousin, Godwin Obaseki was clearly favored by the incumbent Governor of the state to win the party primaries.

Only recently he endorsed Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP as he has become one of the campaign monster that perhaps sounds a major threat to the party he left earlier.

In view of this,Dr. Pedro who earlier reported  to security agencies over series of death threats from certain APC leaders who he alleged may have been angry over his refusal to support the ambition of his cousin, Godwin Obaseki, may have also thought that he has revealed the party secretes to the opposition party to the detriment of its candidate.

When contacted for comments, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike confirmed the incidence while adding that they have taking swift measure to investigate the matter.

Pay your workers, Oshiomhole tells LG chiefs By Eben Enasco Kingsley, Benin City Governor Adams Oshiomhole has directed the Heads of Service of Local Governments to prioritize the payment of Local Government workers’ salaries, adding that they must look inwards to generate revenue to meet their wage bill and block all loopholes. Speaking during a meeting with the Chairman of Esan North East Local Government, Mr. Sam Oboh and Heads of Service of the other seventeen Local Government Areas in the state, on Friday, Oshiomhole said the government does not tamper with one kobo of Local Government funds. He said: “A former Chairman of Etsako West told me how they used to take money to the Governor’s office every month before I assumed office and I told him, under my tenure, we would not accept money either for the Governor, the Deputy Governor or anybody in Government, that they should manage their money by themselves. “You have to state the truth before the Edo public. I need you to confirm whether the state government is involved in your expenditure and if we are not, I need you to say so. “On assumption of office here, I have never asked the Local Governments to fund any state project. You appropriate your money and spend in your local government. If there is fraud in it, it is purely by yourselves, if there is transparency it is by yourselves. “When I see Local Government employees demanding salaries from state government, you cannot work for Leventis and ask Coca-Cola to pay you because you are operating in the same environment. We gave full meaning to the concept of Local Government autonomy. You have full autonomy, as I sit here I have never approved, or refused to approve nor was it ever brought to my consideration, any project that a Local Government wanted to embark upon. I told yourselvesLocal Government revenue cannot pay them, you have to look inwards, look at the  and your predecessors, the Local Government Chairmen that they should spend their money by themselves. If they had problem it was of their creation. “If there’s resource gap arising from the sharp drop in the prices of oil, this is for them to explain and that sharp drop in the price of oil which affects the allocation in the price of oil also affects the allocation to the state government. So they should demand their salary arrears from their respective local governments and not from the state government. “If Local Government revenue cannot pay them, you have to look inwards, look at the leakages. “Like I told the Local Government Union leaders, if anything is going wrong with the finances, the leaders are supposed to point it out. I have never received a petition from the Union leaders saying anything was going wrong, if there was fraud they were watching it, “So when you asked for autonomy and we granted autonomy, that autonomy carries with it responsibility. You earn, you spend, you meet your obligations, whether these obligations are salaries or they are projects, whatever they are. So Edfo State government is not owing any Local Government worker and Edo State Government will not and cannot responsibility to pay Local Government workers when Local Governments are in full control, they have full financial autonomy and full project autonomy. “I need you to understand that the pay day is sacrosanct. I need you to reassure your union, NULGE, to collaborate with you to eliminate any fraud in the slary administration.” Speaking on behalf of the Local Government chiefs, Mr Tom Ebhotemen, Head of Service of Akoko Edo Local Government Area said the “we are aware that the state government does not take any kobo from our allocation. The problem is that the allocation has dropped, we have been paying teachers’ salary and we have also been paying our own workers’ salaries. We have been doing projects before as well as paying salaries. The problem is that the allocation dropped sharply.
